Practical Magic: Crafting Cascarilla
Bobbie Challenger • 6 September 2025
Everyday Protection for Hearth & Spirit

Cascarilla is one of the simplest, yet most potent, magical tools you can make yourself. Born from eggshells, it carries the protective energy of the shell - that which once cradled life. To grind it into powder is to reclaim that shield for your own hearth and spirit.
What is Cascarilla?
Cascarilla is a fine white powder made from ground eggshells. It has long been used in Afro-Caribbean and Latin traditions for protection, purification, and blessing. The practice honours the natural power of the egg: a vessel of life, a symbol of renewal, and a shield against harm.
Why Use It?
Cascarilla serves as a gentle yet powerful way to guard your home, cleanse your energy, and invite blessings. It’s a reminder that magic does not need to be elaborate - sometimes the humblest of materials hold the strongest charge. For me, it is part of what I call spiritual hygiene. Just as we sweep dust from the floor, so too can we sweep unwanted energy from our thresholds.
How to Make Cascarilla
You will need:
- Clean, dry eggshells (as many as you wish - I usually save them over time)
- A pestle and mortar (or a grinder, though handwork carries its own magic)
- A small bowl or jar for storage
The Process:
- Prepare the shells. After using your eggs, rinse the shells gently in cool water. Peel away the inner membrane if possible, as it makes grinding easier. Leave the shells to dry fully. A windowsill where it will bathe in sun or moonlight is perfect.
- Set your intention. Hold the shells in your hands. Whisper your purpose: protection, purification, blessing. Infuse them with your intent before the work begins.
- Grind to powder. Place the shells in your mortar. As you crush them to a fine, chalky dust, chant softly or repeat your intention. Each turn of the pestle weaves your will into the powder. (This process takes a bit of time and patience - but it is worth it. I pass the powder through a fine sieve to remove anything that hasn't ground fully).
- Store with care. Transfer the powder to a small jar. You may like to inscribe a sigil on the lid or tie it with ribbon. Keep it dry, ready for use when needed.
Ways to Use Cascarilla
- Sprinkle or blow across thresholds and windowsills to keep out unwelcome energy.
- Add a pinch to bath water for purification.
- Draw protective symbols on your skin or doors.
- Blow it gently into the corners of rooms that feel stagnant or heavy.
A Final Thought
Crafting cascarilla is a practice of simplicity - a reminder that our homes and lives can be shielded with what is already to hand. By turning the mundane (like saving eggshells) into ritual, we invite magic into our daily lives. It is both shield and blessing, a soft whisper of protection woven into the everyday 🌙✨

The ancient roots of yoga go deep - but somewhere along the modern path, we began shaping it into neat, linear sequences, taught in brightly lit studios to hurried, overcommitted bodies. While these forms have offered structure and accessibility, they often forget something vital to us, as women: the feminine rhythm. Women’s bodies don’t move through life in straight lines. We ebb. We flow. We bleed. We bloom. Our energy rises and recedes like tides. To meet ourselves with tenderness and truth, we need a yoga that honours this rhythm. Enter women’s yoga: This is not a trend, nor a niche, but a reclamation. Honouring the Unique Rhythms of the Female Body From our first bleed to our final hot flush, we are guided by cycles - whether we listen to them or not. Our hormonal blueprint is ever-changing. Some days we crave fire and movement, other days, we long for stillness and rest. And yet, many women force themselves into practices designed for steady, unchanging energy. This mismatch can lead to burnout, injury, or emotional disconnection - not because yoga is harmful, but because it just isn't meeting us where we are at. Women’s yoga dares to ask: What if we stopped overriding our body’s wisdom? What if we actually listened? What Is Women’s Yoga? Women’s yoga is cyclical. It’s grounded in the understanding that we are not the same every day - and we were never meant to be. It’s intuitive. It invites us to soften the need for achievement and drop into deeper layers of awareness. It is truly somatic in its nature and asks: How do I feel today? What do I need? It’s strong in its softness. It honours resilience without glorifying overexertion. Here, slowing down is not laziness - it’s power! This kind of yoga opens space for emotional and energetic intelligence. A women’s yoga class is a sacred space, you might move slowly, cry freely, or lie in stillness as your greatest act of power. You’re allowed to be complex. You’re allowed to be real. Key Differences from Traditional Yoga Where traditional yoga often follows structured, masculine-aligned patterns (think: discipline, repetition, achievement), women’s yoga chooses a cyclical path. It changes with the moon and the seasons. It flows like water. It leans into the language of the womb, the pulse of the earth. Some key differences: Linear vs. Circular : Traditional sequences may prioritise structure and symmetry; women’s yoga embraces flow, spirals, and waves. Performance vs. Presence : Rather than aiming to “master” poses, women’s yoga prioritises presence, sensation, and alignment with one’s inner world and personal anatomy. One-size-fits-all vs. Life-stage Adaptable : Whether you are in the flow of your personal moon, trying to conceive, pregnant, postpartum, or transitioning through menopause - there’s space for you here. Every phase has its own sacred signature. And perhaps most radically: you are not asked to push through . You are asked to feel . Why It’s Deeply Needed Today We are living in a world that rewards speed, productivity, and outward achievement. For many women, this creates a quiet (or not-so-quiet) war with the body. We push when we should pause. We numb when we need to feel. We perform when all we really need is to rest. Women’s yoga is a counterculture. It says: You are not broken. You are tired. And that’s a very different thing! This practice is deeply trauma-informed, recognising the body as a storehouse of unspoken stories. It blends ancient practices with modern somatic wisdom, offering space for safe reconnection, release, and healing. Most importantly, it’s a reclamation. Of feminine movement. Of sacred rest. Of trusting your own pulse over any prescription. How I Hold Space In our women’s yoga community, we do things differently. We tune into the energy of the seasons, the moon, and our own inner cycles. We breathe, move, and rest in ways that honour where we truly are - not where we think we should be. Each class is an invitation to return home to yourself. You won’t find mirrors, competition, or hustle here. You’ll find warmth, welcome, and wildness. We weave together practices like womb yoga, yoga Nidra, intuitive movement, and breathwork - each one crafted to nourish body, heart, and soul. One woman recently said: “ I’ve been doing yoga for years, but I’ve never felt seen like this. Your class gave me permission to just be. I didn’t know how much I needed that. ” Another told me that since joining our circle, she’s started syncing her work week to her cycle, saying 'no' more often, and finally feels “ back in her body ” after years of disconnect. This is the power of women’s yoga. It’s not just a practice. It’s a remembering. Ready to Reconnect? Our Wellness Circle Membership is a sanctuary for this remembering.
