The Heart-Opening Medicine of Cacao

Plant Magic and Embracing Ethical and Sustainable Sourcing

In recent years, cacao has transcended its role as a beloved ingredient in chocolates and desserts to become recognized as a powerful heart-opening medicine. Rooted in ancient traditions, cacao ceremonies are now celebrated globally for their potential to foster emotional healing, spiritual growth, and deep connection. However, the rising popularity of cacao also brings to light the critical need for ethical and sustainable sourcing practices. In this blog post, we’ll explore the profound benefits of ceremonial cacao and why it’s essential to prioritize ethically sourced products.

The Heart-Opening Properties of Cacao

Ceremonial cacao is often referred to as a heart-opener, and for good reason. Rich in theobromine, a natural stimulant, cacao gently enhances mood and focus without the jittery effects of caffeine. This compound, along with anandamide, known as the "bliss molecule," and phenylethylamine, the "love chemical," work synergistically to promote feelings of happiness, love, and connection.

Cacao ceremonies are ritualistic gatherings where participants consume cacao in its purest form, typically as a warm, frothy drink. These ceremonies, which have roots in Mesoamerican cultures, are designed to create a meditative space for introspection, emotional release, and spiritual connection. The process of preparing and consuming cacao with intention can help participants access deeper layers of the heart, facilitating healing and the release of emotional blockages.

The Ethical Imperative in Cacao Sourcing

As the demand for ceremonial cacao grows, it’s vital to ensure that the sourcing of this sacred plant is done ethically and sustainably. The cacao industry has a notorious history of exploitation, including child labour, unfair wages, and environmentally destructive practices. To honour the spirit of cacao, it’s imperative to support farmers and communities who cultivate it with respect and care.

1. Supporting Fair Trade Practices:

Fair trade certification ensures that farmers receive fair compensation for their work. By choosing fair trade cacao, consumers can help support communities and contribute to better living conditions for the farmers and their families.

2. Promoting Organic Farming:

Organic cacao farming avoids harmful pesticides and fertilizers, protecting both the environment and the health of the farmers. Organic practices also help maintain the biodiversity of cacao-growing regions, ensuring the longevity of these ecosystems.

3. Upholding Indigenous Rights:

Many of the traditional practices surrounding cacao are rooted in the cultures of indigenous communities. Supporting companies that work directly with indigenous farmers helps preserve these ancient traditions and provides these communities with the means to sustain their way of life.

4. Ensuring Transparency and Traceability:

Consumers should seek out brands that offer transparency in their sourcing practices. Companies that provide information about the origins of their cacao and the conditions under which it is grown are more likely to adhere to ethical standards.

How to Choose Ethical and Sustainable Cacao

When looking for ceremonial cacao, it’s important to do your research and choose products that align with ethical and sustainable principles. Here are some tips:

  • Look for Certifications: Certifications like Fair Trade, Organic, and Rainforest Alliance can be indicators of better practices.
  • Research the Brand: Investigate the brand’s sourcing policies and commitment to sustainability. Many ethical brands share detailed information about their supply chains.
  • Support Direct Trade: Brands that engage in direct trade with farmers often pay higher prices and establish long-term relationships with farming communities.
  • Read Reviews and Testimonials: Feedback from other consumers can provide insights into the quality and ethical practices of a brand.

The Cacao used in our ceremonies is sourced from Erika Huarcaya. It is prepared with prayers, love and intention using an ancient recipe kindly gifted to me by her.

Cacao’s role as a heart-opening medicine offers a profound opportunity for personal and communal transformation. By choosing ethically and sustainably sourced cacao, we honour the plant's sacred origins and contribute to a more equitable and environmentally conscious world. As consumers, our choices have the power to drive change, ensuring that the magic of cacao benefits not just those who consume it, but also those who cultivate it.

In embracing cacao as a sacred medicine, let us also embrace our responsibility to support the farmers and ecosystems that make this heart-opening journey possible. By doing so, we can enjoy the rich, transformative experience of cacao while fostering a world of fairness, sustainability, and respect.

The ancient roots of yoga go deep - but somewhere along the modern path, we began shaping it into neat, linear sequences, taught in brightly lit studios to hurried, overcommitted bodies. While these forms have offered structure and accessibility, they often forget something vital to us, as women: the feminine rhythm. Women’s bodies don’t move through life in straight lines. We ebb. We flow. We bleed. We bloom. Our energy rises and recedes like tides. To meet ourselves with tenderness and truth, we need a yoga that honours this rhythm. Enter women’s yoga: This is not a trend, nor a niche, but a reclamation. Honouring the Unique Rhythms of the Female Body From our first bleed to our final hot flush, we are guided by cycles - whether we listen to them or not. Our hormonal blueprint is ever-changing. Some days we crave fire and movement, other days, we long for stillness and rest. And yet, many women force themselves into practices designed for steady, unchanging energy. This mismatch can lead to burnout, injury, or emotional disconnection - not because yoga is harmful, but because it just isn't meeting us where we are at. Women’s yoga dares to ask: What if we stopped overriding our body’s wisdom? What if we actually listened? What Is Women’s Yoga? Women’s yoga is cyclical. It’s grounded in the understanding that we are not the same every day - and we were never meant to be. It’s intuitive. It invites us to soften the need for achievement and drop into deeper layers of awareness. It is truly somatic in its nature and asks: How do I feel today? What do I need? It’s strong in its softness. It honours resilience without glorifying overexertion. Here, slowing down is not laziness - it’s power! This kind of yoga opens space for emotional and energetic intelligence. A women’s yoga class is a sacred space, you might move slowly, cry freely, or lie in stillness as your greatest act of power. You’re allowed to be complex. You’re allowed to be real. Key Differences from Traditional Yoga Where traditional yoga often follows structured, masculine-aligned patterns (think: discipline, repetition, achievement), women’s yoga chooses a cyclical path. It changes with the moon and the seasons. It flows like water. It leans into the language of the womb, the pulse of the earth. Some key differences: Linear vs. Circular : Traditional sequences may prioritise structure and symmetry; women’s yoga embraces flow, spirals, and waves. Performance vs. Presence : Rather than aiming to “master” poses, women’s yoga prioritises presence, sensation, and alignment with one’s inner world and personal anatomy. One-size-fits-all vs. Life-stage Adaptable : Whether you are in the flow of your personal moon, trying to conceive, pregnant, postpartum, or transitioning through menopause - there’s space for you here. Every phase has its own sacred signature. And perhaps most radically: you are not asked to push through . You are asked to feel . Why It’s Deeply Needed Today We are living in a world that rewards speed, productivity, and outward achievement. For many women, this creates a quiet (or not-so-quiet) war with the body. We push when we should pause. We numb when we need to feel. We perform when all we really need is to rest. Women’s yoga is a counterculture. It says: You are not broken. You are tired. And that’s a very different thing! This practice is deeply trauma-informed, recognising the body as a storehouse of unspoken stories. It blends ancient practices with modern somatic wisdom, offering space for safe reconnection, release, and healing. Most importantly, it’s a reclamation. Of feminine movement. Of sacred rest. Of trusting your own pulse over any prescription. How I Hold Space In our women’s yoga community, we do things differently. We tune into the energy of the seasons, the moon, and our own inner cycles. We breathe, move, and rest in ways that honour where we truly are - not where we think we should be. Each class is an invitation to return home to yourself. You won’t find mirrors, competition, or hustle here. You’ll find warmth, welcome, and wildness. We weave together practices like womb yoga, yoga Nidra, intuitive movement, and breathwork - each one crafted to nourish body, heart, and soul. One woman recently said: “ I’ve been doing yoga for years, but I’ve never felt seen like this. Your class gave me permission to just be. I didn’t know how much I needed that. ” Another told me that since joining our circle, she’s started syncing her work week to her cycle, saying 'no' more often, and finally feels “ back in her body ” after years of disconnect. This is the power of women’s yoga. It’s not just a practice. It’s a remembering. Ready to Reconnect? Our Wellness Circle Membership is a sanctuary for this remembering. It includes: A weekly women’s yoga class that flows with the moon and your energy A monthly Yoga Nidra for deep rest and nervous system healing A monthly women’s circle for connection and reflection Our 13 Moons Workbook for cyclical living Seasonal journeys to honour your inner and outer transitions Access to a growing library of over 100 recorded practices so you can meet yourself where you are No time for full practices? In a world where we seem to spend our lives rushing from one thing to another, it can be hard to find time to slow down. Yoga nidra, also known as "yogic sleep," is a powerful meditation technique that will allow you to do just that, and it has a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. One of the main benefits of yoga nidra is that it helps to reduce stress and anxiety. This is because during the practice, the body is completely relaxed. As you are guided through a series of visualization and breathing exercises your brainwaves shift from Beta to Alpha. This releases serotonin and really helps to calm the mind and release tension from the body. Yoga nidra also promotes better sleep. Many people have trouble sleeping due to racing thoughts or an overactive mind. By practicing yoga nidra before bed, you can quiet your mind and prepare your body for a deep and restful sleep. Another benefit of yoga nidra is that it can help to improve your overall sense of well-being. It helps to balance the nervous system and release negative emotions, leaving you feeling happier and more fulfilled. Additionally, yoga nidra can help to improve your focus, concentration, and memory, making it an effective tool for both personal and professional growth. The wonderful thing about yoga nidra is that is accessible to people of all ages and abilities, making it a great option for anyone looking to improve their overall health and well-being. Overall, Yoga Nidra is a simple but powerful tool that can help to improve physical, mental and emotional well-being. It helps to reduce stress and anxiety, promotes better sleep, improves focus, concentration, and memory and has a positive impact on overall sense of well-being. It's easy to practice and accessible to all, making it a valuable addition to any self-care routine. If you would like to try it for yourself, Rise Rooted Wellness has monthly online yoga nidra sessions. You can join from anywhere and don't even need to leave the house!
